Barrow Bookstore makes 10Best bookstores list
The store carries used and antique books, with a focus on Acton history and authors, as well as literary-themed gifts.

USA Today recently named Acton’s Barrow Bookstore one of the country’s top 10 independent bookstores.
“We are so honored by the nomination and support from everyone who voted for Barrow Bookstore,” owner Aladdine Joroff said in an email to The Acton Bridge.
“We envision the store as a gathering place for lovers of books and Acton history, both in person and remotely through our online offerings, and that success depends on our reader friends and literary community.”
Barrow Bookstore was founded in 1971 on Henry David Thoreau’s birthday. It started in a wheelbarrow before moving into a traditional storefront; the wheelbarrow remains a landmark.
Barrow has been woman-owned for more than a half-century. The store, in the alley at 79 Main Street, carries used and antique books, with a focus on Acton history and authors, as well as literary-themed gifts.
The 10Best Awards program highlights destinations nationwide and worldwide. Nominations are coordinated by a panel of experts and USA Today 10Best editors; voters decide which end up in the top 10.
In February, the Acton Museum was named the nation’s best small-town museum.
Barrow Bookstore was the only Massachusetts shop on the list. The others are in Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, two in New York, two in Texas, and Tennessee.
