Carolyn “Carol” Parks Bernhardt, 90, was born in Boston on December 31, 1935, and passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Carol attended Acton Academy and made her home for many years in Acton, where she and her first husband, Wil Smith, raised their family. Together, they owned and managed the local Howard Johnson’s, becoming part of the fabric of the Acton community. They later made their home on Cape Cod, a place that would remain an important part of Carol’s life for many years.
After Wil’s death, Carol was fortunate to find love again with Lawrence Bernhardt. They married and spent many happy years together on Cape Cod, enjoying travel, family, friends, and the companionship of a life shared together.
In her later years, Carol made her home at Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth. There, she embraced a new community, forming friendships with fellow residents and staff and genuinely enjoying the people and activities that became part of her everyday life.
Carol lived a long and full 90 years. She was devoted to her family and those she loved, and she will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, strength, and healthy sense of dry humor. Family was at the center of her life, and she leaves behind generations who will remember not only the milestones, but the stories, laughter, traditions, and countless moments in between.
Carol is survived by her children Robert Smith, David and Pam Smith, and Barbara Banks; her stepdaughters Heidi and Mark Carroll, Kristine and John McTaggart, and Laurie Wiltshire; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Katherine Parks; her sisters Barbara Hepler and Penny McDonald; her first husband Wil Smith; and her second husband Lawrence Bernhardt.
Carol will be deeply missed by the family and friends whose lives she touched. After 90 years, she leaves them with a lifetime of stories to tell, memories to treasure, and plenty to smile about.
Trunks up!
