Acton public libraries will act as warming centers as temperatures plunge across the region.

Arctic air was forecast to arrive overnight Thursday into Friday, with temperatures plummeting below zero.

Acton fire officials warned that wind chill values could feel as cold as -25 degrees Fahrenheit. The teeth-chattering cold could linger into the weekend.

  • The Main Library branch at 129 Main Street will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It will be open from 1 -5 p.m. on Sunday, unless snow forces a closure.
  • West Acton’s Fowler Branch Library at 1322 Main Street will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It will be closed Sunday.

The Acton Fire Department announced the warming center plans Thursday evening.

Anyone who needs help when libraries aren’t open or is seeking transportation to a warming center, should call public safety dispatchers at (978) 318-3400.

In a life-threatening emergency, always dial 911.

Authorities last directed people to warming centers just over a week ago as temperatures plunged ahead of the massive snowstorm that blanketed Acton in well over a foot of powder.
