It’s Memorial Day weekend — here’s how Acton will celebrate

The Acton Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee invites all Acton veterans and members of the public to the annual Memorial Day Commemorations, which will be held on Monday, May 29.

The West Acton Memorial Day Remembrance commemorations will begin at Percy A. Rideout Field at 9 a.m., proceeding to Kenneth J. Dunn Square. The Acton Independent Battery, Acton Minutemen, Acton Police Honor Guard and members of the CPCCC will participate, along with Town of Acton veterans.

Commemorations will continue in Acton Center at 11 a.m., at which time those same participants will proceed to the green on Monument Square and place commemorative wreaths at the various monuments. The Acton Independent Battery will fire several times throughout the morning.

For some, beginning in 1775 and continuing today, responding to the challenge of citizenship has also meant a period of service in the Armed Forces. More than 1,400 men and women from Acton went to fight in WWII and about three hundred each to Korea and to Vietnam. Today, almost 1,000 Veterans live in Acton. Memorial Day is day for reflection and a time to honor and commemorate those service members who did not make it home, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives in our nation’s defense.
