You may spot lots of police and fire personnel at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center on Friday, February 20. Don’t panic — officials are just conducting an emergency shelter training exercise.

The Acton Police and Fire Departments, along with the Public Works and Public Health Department, are practicing how to open and operate the center during disasters.

The exercise runs from 9 a.m. to noon and will feature volunteers playing shelter-seekers.

Harvey Wheeler can accommodate up to 243 people during such events. Staff will practice registration, medical screenings, and resource allocation to prepare for storms or other emergencies that could leave residents temporarily without housing.

Concordians may notice an increased presence of public safety and town personnel during the exercise, the town said in a notification, but there is no danger to the public.
