Nature’s fury: Storm sends tree smashing down on car carrying three
The passengers “were very lucky” to escape without major injuries, police Capt. Brian Goldman said.

Tuesday’s violent afternoon storm sent a venerable tree toppling down onto Church Street in West Acton, crushing a car but leaving the passengers with non-life-threatening injuries.

The tree came down between 5 and 5:30 p.m., smashing into a car carrying two adults and one child, police Capt. Brian Goldman and fire Capt. Keith Cotoni told The Acton Bridge.

Cotoni said the passengers got out of the car on their own power. They were taken to the hospital for evaluation, he said.
Crews were still clearing Church Street near the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue of the tree and remaining debris into the evening.

“They were very lucky,” Goldman said of the car’s occupants.

The storm brought down other trees as it swept through town, Goldman and Cotoni said, but by about 9:30 p.m., the municipal power outage map showed just a single customer out of service.
