Acton spent much of Monday digging out from Winter Storm Fern.

Schools, municipal offices, and public libraries remained closed, as did many businesses, as the town saw the tail end of the storm, which dumped more than 14 inches of powder here, according to National Weather Service tallies.

Acton public schools and Acton-Carlisle High School announced Tuesday start times will be two hours later than usual and there will be no half-day morning preschool.

Police reported no major weather-related incidents by Monday afternoon, although Capt. Brian Goldman said the department was eyeing the evening, when more drivers might feel emboldened to hit the road.

Acton Fire Chief Brian Whitney told The Acton Bridge that things had generally been quiet, and that firefighters were working to clear snow away from hydrants.

The Acton Municipal Light Plant reported only a few brief outages affecting a handful of customers.

Acton Public Works Director Alan Cathcart said “the roads will be clear” by 7 a.m. Tuesday. (Sidewalks are a different story.) Crews will prioritize clearing downtown areas, paths around schools, and sites such as MBTA parking, he said.

As they dig out, residents can pick up free sand and salt from town receptacles in West Acton at the main Rideout Field parking lot and in Acton Center at the municipal water pumping station on Keyes Road.

Meanwhile, Acton kids off from school got some chill time with friends.

Reader Carmi Punzalan shared this charming snap of Thoreau (Hills) fifth graders bundled up in our winter wonderland.

And some got creative with the bumper crop of snow: Bridge reader Jaclyn Bentinck-Smith snapped Madelyn, Addie, and Emmett putting their cold-weather engineering skills to use.
