School’s out — in this district — for Acton Middle School Principal Justin Cameron.

Cameron said in an email to families that the decision came after accepting a central office leadership position with Ashland Public Schools, where he will help lead student services and special education.

Cameron has been Acton Middle School’s principal for nine years and has been a middle school principal for 15. He announced his departure in a letter to families, saying it was time “to begin a new chapter in my career.”

In his letter, Cameron reflected on the changes that took place during his tenure. When he arrived, Acton’s middle school students were split between separate schools, Peabody and Sanborn. During his and schools Superintendent Laurie Hunter’s tenure, the district combined the two into the Ellen Garrison Building at Acton Middle School.

Cameron said the district’s commitment to providing students with a strong middle school experience remained constant throughout those changes.

“I have always believed that schools are at their best when relationships come first,” Cameron said in the email.

“Whether through conversations in classrooms and hallways, Socials, band concerts, athletic and Unified events, school celebrations, or the countless moments that make up each day,” he wrote, “it has been a privilege to watch Boston and Acton students learn, grow, and discover who they are becoming.”

He also thanked the Acton Middle School Parent Teacher Group, Acton Education Fund, and community organizations and volunteers for supporting the school during his tenure.

“Thank you for allowing me to be part of such an important chapter in your children’s lives,” Cameron wrote. “I leave with immense gratitude for this community and complete confidence that Acton Middle School’s brightest days are still ahead.”

In a separate email, Assistant Principal Dan Hausermann announced he would step in as interim principal. Hunter told The Acton Bridge that the search for a permanent principal will begin in January.
