Rainbow crosswalks a new enhancement for Acton Pride

Temporary rainbow decals will be installed in Acton Center and possibly West Acton.

Acton’s Pride Month celebration will return this June with a slate of community events, performances, and activities across town — and, for the first time, a temporary rainbow crosswalk.

At the May 18 Select Board meeting, town Economic Vitality Manager Mimi Graney presented updated plans for the installation of rainbow-colored decals on an existing crosswalk near Vanderhoof Hardware in Acton Center.

“They’ll be giant decals in different colors — kind of blocks of color that would be installed,” Graney said.

After doing a test in West Acton, Graney told The Acton Bridge in an email that plans changed due to the durability of the decals.

Now, instead of the decals lasting the full month, the Acton Center installation will stay in place only for the celebration and be removed before traffic reopens. “We’re still looking for alternative locations in West Acton,” she added.

Graney said the designs had to be revised to comply with roadway regulations, including adjusting the decals’ size and colors so as not to conflict with official traffic markings.

This year’s Acton Pride Festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, beginning with a march down Main Street at 9 a.m.

Events throughout the day will include live performances in Monument Square, family activities at The Umbrella Arts Center, a teen “Queeraoke” event at the Acton Free Public Library, and community gatherings at First Parish.

Additional Pride Month programming is planned throughout June, including art nights, film screenings, craft workshops, history talks, and dance parties hosted by local organizations. More information can be found at ConcordPride.org.
