The growl of heavy machinery replaced the familiar “pop” of pickleball as crews recently began replacing tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts at Rideout Park.

The rest of Rideout remains open, with limited parking available in the Laws Brook Road lot.

Demolition began in late August. Crews quickly tore through fences, toppled old basketball hoops, and started ripping up asphalt. The courts will stay closed until mid-November “or until the project is completed,” per a town announcement.

The project cost from the Rowley-based Quirk Construction came in at roughly $1.04 million, Interim Superintendent of Highway and Grounds Erik Shaw told The Acton Bridge. The town is funding the overhaul from multiple sources, including an allocation from its Community Preservation Act coffers.

Some in Acton pushed to create designated courts for pickleball, which has grown in popularity and shared space with tennis on the old courts. The idea drew opposition from tennis players and neighbors, and the Recreation Commission opted to line the remaining new courts for both sports.
