Willard Elementary School Principal Matthew Lucey will retire at the end of the school year, prompting the district to begin a search for new leadership.

“It is bittersweet to wish Mr. Lucey well in his retirement,” schools Superintendent Laurie Hunter told The Acton Bridge in an email. “We hope to find a candidate as compassionate, caring, and committed.”

Lucey served as Willard’s principal for nine years.

The district has posted the position with a salary range of $165,000 to $175,000, a July 1 start date, and an application deadline of February 9.

According to the posting, the candidate sought is a “student-centered and dynamic educational leader” who will serve approximately 400 students while working alongside an assistant principal and an “involved parent community.”

In a form posted for those interested in serving on the search committee, the district outlined a hiring process that will unfold over February and March. The committee is set to convene for the first time today, February 6.

Hunter said the timing of the search allows the district to participate in the peak hiring season for school administrators and attract a strong pool of candidates. She added that the search is expected to conclude in mid- to late March.
