A ‘yes’ vote on Question 2 helps fans, visitors of all generations

At times I have been faced with a dilemma: Should I brave the porta-potties, climb the hill, or go home early?

On August 19 I urge a “yes” vote on Question 2 to fund the Acton-Carlisle High School amenities building. This is actually a “necessities” building since bathrooms are more than an “amenity.” By voting “yes” on Question 2 we will ratify the June Annual Town Meeting vote and join Carlisle in funding this necessary project.

I am a not-very-agile octogenarian grandmother. Between 2019 and 2030 seven of our grandchildren will have attended CCHS. Since 2019 my husband and I have spent countless hours cheering on field hockey, tennis, soccer, softball, baseball (and soon to be cheerleaders and lacrosse) teams. At times I have been faced with a dilemma: Should I brave the porta-potties, climb the hill, or go home early?

This is about more than my reality. The amenities building is first and foremost necessary for the disabled. But it is also important for young children, fans, parents, and grandparents of CCHS athletes and visiting teams and for the athletes themselves.

I end with a scenario. We have watched the CCHS girls tennis team for years. A visiting team arrives and troops down the hill carrying huge bags of racquets, clothes, books, etc. Some teams have been on the bus for as much as an hour. The CCHS coach greets them warmly and smiles abound. He concludes, “Should you wish to freshen up, there are bathrooms in the high school back up the hill or three porta-potties over by the stands.” The smiles turn to frowns, and the players don’t feel very welcomed by Acton.

Please go to the polls on August 19 and vote “yes” on Question 2.
