Adhering to meeting agendas promotes meaningful debate

While this can sometimes feel procedural or restrictive, the intent is not to avoid difficult conversations. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

Serving as chair of an elected committee in Acton means constantly balancing two important responsibilities: fostering open, honest discussion and ensuring the committee operates fairly, legally, and effectively on behalf of the community.

In recent weeks, questions have been raised about why certain topics cannot be discussed if they are not on the posted agenda. While this can sometimes feel procedural or restrictive, the intent is not to avoid difficult conversations. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

Agenda discipline exists so that School Committee members can have meaningful discussions. When topics are raised in advance, members are able to review background materials, consult data, and come prepared with informed perspectives. That preparation leads to richer dialogue, clearer disagreement, and ultimately better decision-making. It is also a matter of fairness: to committee members who prepare, and to members of the public who rely on the agenda to understand what will be discussed.

As chair, I have consistently asked that committee members raise issues ahead of time rather than introducing them unexpectedly during meetings. When that does not happen, frustration can sometimes show, not because the issue is unimportant, but because discussing it without preparation risks doing it a disservice.

It is also worth clarifying that open meeting law applies differently depending on one’s role. Elected committee members are bound to deliberate only on posted agenda items. The superintendent, who is not a member of the public body, may provide context or information in a different capacity.

None of this diminishes the importance of transparency, accountability, or public trust. Those values are best served when conversations are structured, informed, and accessible to the entire community.

As always, I encourage members of the community to tune into School Committee meetings to get a better sense of the issues we are grappling with together.
