Anderson has made Acton ‘a better place’
Some of the misguided negative feelings about Alexa’s role in the school naming carried over to this past election.
I was appalled by the personal attacks against several candidates in the weeks preceding the recent election. I was most upset with the attacks Alexa Anderson and her family had to endure both during this election and in her time as the chair of the School Committee.
The attacks began over the issue of naming the new middle school school when Alexa and the committee received survey results that said the town’s first choice was Acton Middle School.
As things transpired there was a strong response in favor of an excellent Concordian to name the school after. An extended and unpleasant series of School Committee meetings took place as Alexa tried to incorporate the two positions. In the end, she succeeded in creating an acceptable compromise by listening carefully to both sides. She should have received credit for this success.
Unfortunately, some of the misguided negative feelings about Alexa’s role in the school naming carried over to this past election. Personal attacks continued and led to Alexa’s loss at the polls.
When she lost the election, Acton lost a homegrown treasure, a person who deeply cares about the welfare of this town and has since her high school days, when she was student government representative to the School Committee. For three years, she worked tirelessly to represent student concerns. I was the faculty adviser at that time and admired her passion and compassion. Beyond that, Alexa was acutely aware of the plight of marginalized students and worked to make their lives safer by helping to create Spectrum. Alexa made CCHS a better place while she was a student and continued to make it a better place as an adult.
Alexa should be thanked for all she has done for the town of Acton and its schools.
