As energy rates rise, here are tips to help stay cool — and save cash

Recently some seniors discussed the new electric rates to begin April 1. One mentioned the peak hours include times when people get home and switch on their air conditioners. Working nights means I will be using peak hour electricity, too, while not benefiting from cheaper times due to my sleep schedule.

Yet, that’s OK. My Depression-era parents taught me to switch off lights/appliances I’m not using. I’m not a big fan of AC, only using it during extreme weather. Fans suffice nicely for me and are quite cost-effective. I also use fans in conjunction with AC to help circulate the cool air throughout my home and do likewise in winter to circulate warm air.

A judicious use of trees and shrubbery can be quite helpful in cooling one’s home and sheltering it from fierce winter storms. Evergreen bushes can grow quite tall without presenting the same hazards as large trees, while still providing great shade.

For those able, a screened-in porch provides wonderful respite from heat, especially in conjunction with fans. Also small yard ponds, especially those with water fountains, can be quite soothing and cooling. Or put one’s feet in a cold bucket of water. Invite some friends. Then, relax awhile outside with a cold drink, eat a snack, and read The Bridge before going in to turn on the AC. It might become so pleasant, one doesn’t need to turn on the TV or computer right away.

Other simple ways to decrease usage: Try pulling window shades and running fans during the day so things are not so unbearably hot when one returns. This helps things stay cooler. That way the AC doesn’t have to work so hard later to cool the house, further cutting electrical costs.

Use your ingenuity. Stay cool.
