Black Heritage Trail deserves prominent signage

Acton has an opportunity to demonstrate that historic preservation and inclusive storytelling can work together.

The Black Heritage Trail signage proposed by the Black Heritage Advisory Team — highlighting Black individuals who played vital roles in Acton’s history — deserves the town’s full approval.

For generations, the contributions of Black residents have been overlooked or left out of Acton’s public narrative. These interpretive markers are intended not only to educate, but to address that absence in a way that is clear, meaningful, and visible.

Recent feedback from the Select Board and Historic Districts Commission has emphasized reducing the size, scale, and visual prominence of the signage. Such changes undermine the very purpose of the project. A trail created to correct historical invisibility cannot succeed if its presence is diminished.

Visibility is central — not optional — to this effort. If the markers are made too small or subdued, they will be easily overlooked and their educational and cultural impact will be weakened.

Acton has an opportunity to demonstrate that historic preservation and inclusive storytelling can work together. By embracing this project as designed, the town can strengthen and deepen its historical landscape, ensuring it reflects a more complete and honest account of its past.
