Boys soccer logs third straight shutout

Burke Breimyer and Max Hepworth each scored in the first half and the Acton-Carlisle boys soccer team overcame injuries in the second half to preserve a 2-0 shutout win over Belmont on October 3. It was the Patriots’ third straight shutout win, boosting their season-opening undefeated streak to eight games.

  • Team record: Overall 7-0-1; Dual County League 3-0-1
  • Big game: Breimyer scored for the second game in a row and starred at both ends, playing stellar defense as center back, having moved over from his usual right back to cover for the injured Peter Brown. Hepworth scored for the seventh game in a row.
  • Unsung heroes: Missing three starters at the beginning of the game, CCHS lost three additional starters to injury, yet the entire team pulled together to win. Defenders Nate Seeley, Samuel Keener, and Oscar Neijstrom, and defensive midfielder Rory Best limited Belmont’s dangerous opportunities.
  • Up next: The Patriots were to visit Bromfield on October 6.

CCHS 4, Bishop Feehan 0

In a donnybrook on October 1, the Patriots maintained their composure to top previously unbeaten Bishop Feehan for the team’s fifth shutout victory in seven games on the season.

  • Big game: Matan Yosefson opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, emerging from a scramble to poke the ball just over the goal line for his first varsity goal. He also assisted on the final goal, launching a fireball the Bishop Feehan goalkeeper could not control. Hepworth sent the rebound into the net.
  • Turning point: In the 50th minute, Sam Keener delivered a long ball toward the box. After the defender missed the easy clearance, the ball fell to Adrian Avini, who calmly touched home for a 3-0 advantage.
  • Unsung heroes: Brown, playing through a wrist injury suffered in the game, was consistent in the defensive line, heading away long ball attempts to neutralize Bishop Feehan’s attacks. Breimyer found the back of the net for the Patriots’ second goal of the match.

Despite gritty defense, volleyball posts losses

By Vu Hoang — Sports Contributor

Acton-Carlisle volleyball fought hard on defense, racking up an impressive 44 team digs in a tough 0-3 home loss to Burlington on October 1. Burlington’s strategic mix of deep and short serves kept the Pats on their toes, but a relentless back-row effort had the Patriots fighting through every rally.

  • Scores by set: CCHS-Burlington (10-25, 20-25, 15-25)
  • Team record: Overall 2-6; Dual County League 1-4
  • Big day: Keira Sterry led the setters with 10 assists.
  • Turning point: Strong serving and defense gave the Pats the lead more than halfway through the second set.
  • Unsung hero: Sadie Constable delivered multiple block touches, keeping the ball alive for the offense to set up.
  • Up next: The Pats were to host Waltham on October 5 and travel to Newton South on October 7.

Lincoln-Sudbury 3, CCHS 0

Despite standout defensive efforts, the Patriots dropped a straight-sets battle to Lincoln-Sudbury on September 29.

  • Scores by set: CCHS-Lincoln-Sudbury (16-25, 20-25, 17-25)
  • Big day: Libero Kylie Hoang anchored the Patriots’ back row with a game-high 16 digs, consistently digging up heavy attacks and giving CCHS crucial second-chance attack opportunities to keep rallies alive against a relentless Lincoln-Sudbury offense.
  • Turning point: After falling 16-25 in the opening frame, the Patriots found their groove in a hard-fought second set, tightening their defense and pushing the Warriors to the limit before ultimately dropping the set 20-25.
  • Unsung heroes: Bella Cuozzo spearheaded the front-row scoring with six kills and an ace. Adrienne Venesy delivered dependable two-way play through consistent net attacks and steady defensive coverage.
