Acton residents should adopt water conservation measures

Two water filtration plant employees taught us that we are using almost all the water as a community on sprinklers.

Imagine if you had to wake up in the morning and walk 5 miles in the hot sun to get water that isn’t even safe to drink. I am a concerned resident and student of the Acton community. In our recent unit, we studied how we use too much water and need to cut back on our use. We know this because two water filtration plant employees taught us that we are using almost all the water as a community on sprinklers. Every day I drive to school and see a countless amount of sprinklers running at each house, so I have seen this firsthand.

One important thing that we learned when reading “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park is how every day the protagonist has to fill up five gallons of water that still is not safe. They don’t have a chance to take water for granted, because it is so scarce. For example, in 2018 people in Cape Town, South Africa, used more water than what was available and almost hit day zero. They took water for granted and almost ran out before they even knew it.

We need to act now and stop the waste of water in Acton. We can turn the water off when we brush our teeth, take shorter showers, and run sprinklers only when necessary. Citizens of the Acton community must start now, or we will hit day zero.
