Don’t let antisemitic acts get ‘swept under the rug’

I was disheartened by the packaged comments of public officials about “not tolerating antisemitic acts between its students.”

Thirty years ago, when we told my dad, who survived the Holocaust, we were moving to Acton, he warned me about antisemitism. Thankfully, our children who attended the public schools never experienced anything overt.

Thanks to The Bridge for covering “Federal complaint alleges ‘rampant’ antisemitism at CCHS.” This is what independent journalism is all about. Initially, my response was that the complaint is asking the U.S. Department of Education to stick it to a wealthy blue community in a blue state. As I read the article, unlike the sanctions against Harvard, I believe this complaint is genuine.

I was especially disheartened by the packaged comments of public officials about “not tolerating antisemitic acts between its students.”

Here is my question: According to the article, in an email to The Bridge, the superintendent said, “Every report is fully investigated and addressed swiftly and seriously.” Later in the article, it became clear that the harassment of this student started in middle school, and it continued into the 10th grade, at which point he transferred to another school.

It feels like this and other recent incidents are being swept under the rug. I call on our elected School Committee to get to the bottom of this situation and better inform the community. Waiting till the next School Committee meeting in late August is neither swift nor acceptable.
