Don’t waste water when some are desperate for every gallon

As a student at The Fenn School, I believe that we need to use water more responsibly.

Did you know that only 1% of water on Earth is drinkable? As a student at The Fenn School, I believe that we need to use water more responsibly.

For starters, one important point I learned from our unit on water was that you need to be aware of how much water you use. To create one pound of beef uses 1,800 gallons of water. In the novel “A Long Walk To Water,” people in South Sudan, specifically a character in the book, Nya, walked miles and miles every day in the hot, arid desert to bring back one gallon of dirty, contaminated water to survive with her family.

When we let our shower run while we are waiting for it to heat up, we’ve wasted gallons of clean, perfectly fine water that people in South Sudan could’ve used. The average American household’s daily water footprint, including water needed to produce foods and other items, is over 2,000 gallons, according to some sources. Nya walked 10 miles to get one gallon of water, but we use around 2,000 gallons of water every day.

I encourage everyone to act responsibly with water, and I believe that as a member of the Fenn and Acton community, we can make a tremendous difference together.
