Help elders stay in Acton by voting ‘yes’ on Article 46
Long range plans and housing studies have long advocated for elderly Concordians to remain in town.
After 56 years in Acton we’re lucky to be living at Newbury Court and knowing we can stay in Acton for the rest of our days. For three years we have loved living in the Independent Living portion of the Newbury Court campus. Should the need arise, we can receive assistance in our apartment or move to Rivercrest or the Gardens here on campus.
Which brings us to the reason for this letter. Article 46 will be voted on at the June 4 annual Town Meeting. It calls for a continuing care residential community (CCRC) overlay zone on the land recently purchased by Newbury Court’s parent organization, the New England Deaconess Association. The 12-acre parcel is on ORNAC across from Newbury Court and Emerson Hospital and bordering the Acton Country Club and Old Marlboro Road.
Newbury Court is working with the town and the neighbors to craft the details of the overlay zone. The zone would allow for the expansion of the Newbury Court campus but not overwhelm the site. Specific plans are subject to site plan approval by the Planning Board.
There are 500 on the waiting list, many with Acton connections. Newbury Court is the only independent living community in Acton. The math speaks for the need to expand to this ideal location.
Long range plans and housing studies have long advocated for elderly Concordians to remain in town. A “yes” on Article 46 will enable more seniors to have that chance.
Newbury Court is non-profit yet pays almost a million dollars in town taxes each year. The mission statement of the Deaconess Association is to “Nurture the mind, body and spirit in an environment of dignity and respect for the lifelong contribution of its residents.”
Please vote “yes” on Article 46.
