How a simple act of kindness can ameliorate stressful times

Recently, on a very cold but sunny day, while walking west toward Acton, I saw something glittering.

In this era of disappointment, fear, anxiety, and anger that seems to be gripping the nation and the world, it is no wonder that I find myself needing to escape to the outside, unplugged, and inhale the freshness of the air, the surprises of nature, and quiet solitude.

I have loved walking the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail for years. But recently, on a very cold but sunny day, while walking west toward Acton, I saw something glittering. (Truth be known, I was very close to turning back toward home just before I saw these sparkles.)

As I drew closer, an evergreen tree (balsam, fir? I’m not sure) appeared. It was adorned with individual light bulbs. In addition, each bulb had glitter inside and, more amazing, a message. Each light, a different message. A sign on the tree encouraged all to take one. I did, of course. My message was, “Your heart is resilient,” on one side and, “You’re still becoming,” on the other.

This is what I call a grace note, unearned and unexpected, and yet so tender, heartfelt, and caring. It is a good reminder to us all: Small acts of kindness matter. Their ripple effects go far beyond anything we can imagine.

Whoever this kind person (or people) might be, thank you for brightening my day and those of many others.
