Israeli flags ‘an expression of love in the face of hate’

If you watch even one of the atrocities on social media, perhaps you will understand the memorial is an admirably restrained response.

The letter “Honor all victims of Mideast violence” (September 5) was shocking. The author presumes to recommend to a Jewish family how they should mourn their dead. On October 7, Hamas intended to show Jews all over the world just how much they are hated. They chose to do this on a scale unprecedented since the Holocaust. If you watch even one of the exuberant atrocities posted on social media, perhaps you will understand the memorial is a modest and admirably restrained response. It is an expression of love in the face of hate. It deserves our support and the family our sympathy.

What does not deserve our support is the pretty suggestion that Concordians should “recognize no borders and remain unbound by political and religious affiliation.” Must a Jewish family choose between being Jews and being Concordians? Is that not the ancient message — “Do not be a Jew; you will find no shelter here, no solace, no acceptance”?

Perhaps the author does not recognize the implied insult. Nevertheless, he owes Acton’s Jews an apology.
