Keep Town Meeting debates, votes separate

In an era of national voter disenfranchisement, I hope Acton could be a vanguard in democratic empowerment.

As a new resident, I arrived eager to participate in Acton’s “direct democracy” at Town Meeting. I was quite surprised to see how effectively the current format introduces a stark selection bias — essentially disenfranchising young families, those with rigid schedules, or those otherwise unable to physically attend many consecutive evenings. Participation should be a measure of civic engagement, not endurance.

Acton is rightly seeking a Home Rule petition for remote voting (Bill H.4522). However, we shouldn’t wait indefinitely for the General Court to amend Chapter 39 or for a statewide pilot program to conclude. We should explore and exhaust all options within our own “garden to tend,” such as scheduling voting in a single evening. This preserves the tradition of debate while making the act of voting more accessible — indeed, 64% of respondents to the 2024 Town Meeting Study Committee survey favored separating voting from deliberation.

Critics to alternative voting arrangements may argue that hearing debate before voting is essential, yet we apply this standard to no other election. We trust Concordians to be informed when voting for president or governor; we should not mandate a specific media diet as a prerequisite for the local ballot. Scheduling of a “voting night,” for instance, wouldn’t interfere with community debate — indeed, such a proposal would give citizens even more time to consider points made after a good night’s rest (or two).

In an era of national voter disenfranchisement, I hope Acton could be a vanguard in democratic empowerment. Let’s make Town Meeting a reflection of our whole town, not just those with the luxury of time. I hope you’ll join the discussion at the June 1 Select Board meeting, where this will be a formal agenda item.
