Large turnout makes Pumpkin Smash a smashing success for sustainability

We diverted 6,700+ pounds of pumpkins from the waste stream — turning trash into food and nutrient-rich compost.

This year’s Great Pumpkin Smash was Mothers Out Front Acton’s most successful yet. It was filled with energy, smiles, and a wonderful sense of community. We welcomed approximately 921 attendees, including many families and neighbors who joined us for the very first time. Together, we diverted an impressive 6,700+ pounds of pumpkins from the waste stream — turning what would otherwise be trash into food for Codman’s adorable pigs and cows as well as into nutrient-rich compost.

A huge thank-you goes to Codman Farm, whose beautiful venue, fantastic food, and generous support created the perfect setting for the day. Codman Farm brought in the band The Honey Badgers. Their warm and cheerful sound could be heard and appreciated throughout the farm for the duration of the event.

We’re also grateful to every partner who made this day special:

  • The Ice Cream Bike, always a hit with kids and adults alike.
  • Face painters Patti and Dana, whose talent brought big magic to small faces.
  • Edward Feather Photography, for capturing the spirit of the celebration.
  • Black Earth Compost, for their generous gift certificate of 6 months of curbside compost pickup.
  • Wheelworks, supporting sustainable transportation and local engagement; and
  • Weston Community Children’s Association (WCCA), for helping spread the word and bringing families together.

Events like the Pumpkin Smash show how sustainability and joy can go hand in hand. Thank you to everyone — vendors, volunteers, and attendees — who helped create such a memorable day. We can’t wait to welcome even more first-time participants next year.
