Let Williams bring important issues up for School Committee discussion

The majority of the members of the School Committee have obviously and unfairly made up their mind about Michael.

As a volunteer with Dr. Michael Williams’ campaign for a position on the School Committee, I knocked on hundreds of doors and spoke with hundreds of people. Most of the conversations I had were inspiring. It was evident to me that the people of Acton were responding to Michael’s message of compassion and inclusion, as well as the need for honest, respectful, reasoned dialog about the important, and sometimes uncomfortable, issues faced by our town.

Of course, not everyone I spoke to was convinced that Michael was the right candidate for the job. Fair enough. That is the political process. I told myself: If he wins and takes a seat on the School Committee, everyone in time will see, and appreciate, the qualities I treasure in my friend. The sky won’t fall. Reason, honesty, and compassion will carry the day.

Reason, honesty, and compassion are not, however, carrying the day. The majority of the members of the School Committee have obviously and unfairly made up their mind about Michael and are refusing to allow him to place important issues — including the need for the School Committee to respond more actively to incidents of hate and bias — on the agenda for discussion. Michael won his position and won the trust of our town by a wide margin and yet is actively being prevented from discussing the issues, including antisemitism, that have caused so much pain in our community and that desperately need our attention.

If you were at the October 8, 2025, School Committee meeting, or if you view it on video, you will see what I mean.

The majority of members are convinced: Problems are best solved by not talking about them.

Michael was elected. Fair and square. We put him there. Let him, and the town, speak.
