Let’s applaud the ‘meaningful work’ Acton’s leaders do for METCO

I commend Acton Schools for their unwavering commitment to METCO and, most importantly, to the students it serves. Their dedication to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion has been recognized at the highest levels. On January 21, METCO president and CEO Milly Arbaje-Thomas visited Acton and made it clear: “I can tell you that I am very impressed with the work that has happened here.” She highlighted Acton as a model for the state — something we should all take pride in.

The district’s leadership has consistently responded to the needs of METCO students and families. Superintendent Laurie Hunter’s decision to add weekend and vacation bus service, ensuring students can fully participate in athletics and extracurriculars, is just one example. Acton spends more than the state requires, which Acton should celebrate.

A select few have questioned the administration’s approach to the METCO program, but this presentation from the METCO director highlights that the students are happy and that meaningful work is underway. While there is always room for improvement, the program continues to strengthen our schools and reflect the diversity of our greater community. Acton’s leadership in this effort is something to be proud of. While there is always room for improvement, a great deal of meaningful work is happening that deserves recognition. Our schools are stronger when they reflect the diversity of our greater community, and we should be proud of Acton’s leadership in making that a reality.
