Let’s treat our ‘tireless, hard-working’ public officials with the proper respect

Our elected officials are not engaged in backroom maneuvering. They have returned to the drawing board because they must.

In a recent letter, a writer suggested that Acton’s elected officials were “scheming” to build a new bathroom using community funds, despite voters’ having rejected a related issue in August. This characterization is simply not accurate.

Our elected officials are not engaged in backroom maneuvering. They have returned to the drawing board because they must. The law requires that our community provide ADA-compliant bathrooms. To ignore that obligation would be both illegal and unjust. The task before them now is to find a lawful, practical solution that respects the voters’ decision while ensuring that Acton remains accessible to all.

Accusations of scheming do nothing to advance this effort. They erode trust in the very people who dedicate countless hours to serving our town. We should remember that Acton’s officials are our neighbors — tireless, hard-working citizens who juggle more than 40 hours a week at full-time jobs while also shouldering the heavy responsibilities of public service. They do this not for pay, but for the good of our community. Whether we agree or disagree with their specific positions, they deserve our respect and gratitude.

The challenges facing Acton are real. Meeting legal requirements, protecting accessibility, and addressing community concerns is not easy. But the way we talk about these challenges matters. If our rhetoric in Acton begins to mirror the toxic climate in Washington, D.C., we will all be poorer for it.

Acton thrives when we debate passionately yet respectfully, when we challenge one another without tearing each other down. Let’s recognize the good faith of those who serve and work together to solve problems, rather than undermine the process with baseless accusations.
