Moms and sons, bond through volunteering
It’s mentorship, leadership development, and intentional time together during years that can feel fleeting.
Every parent wants their child to feel connected: to family, to community, and to something bigger than themselves. And in that pursuit, the moms I meet are seeking out experiences that foster belonging, build confidence, and give our kids a genuine sense of purpose.
My daughter and I have found a connection through community service with National Charity League. It has given us shared purpose, perspective, and lasting bonds. Yet for years, there has been no comparable opportunity for mothers and their sons in our area — until now.
A group of moms from Acton, Acton, and Bedford is launching the inaugural Middlesex Chapter of Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), a national organization that brings mothers and high school-age boys together through service. This isn’t just volunteering. It’s mentorship, leadership development, and intentional time together during years that can feel fleeting.
YMSL offers something uniquely powerful: a structured way for boys to step outside their immediate world, build empathy, and grow into confident, compassionate young men — alongside their mothers. In a time when many teens feel disconnected, this kind of shared experience can be transformative.
We are welcoming families with boys currently in eighth and ninth grade from communities within a 30-minute driving radius from Acton to learn more about YMSL. Moms, please join us at one of our upcoming informational meetings: May 3 (2-3 p.m.) or May 8 (12-1 p.m.) at the Acton Free Public Library, Trustees Room. Space is limited; RSVP to [email protected].
