Monument Square should honor town’s Revolutionary War dead
Thanks to the work of Beth van Duzer, we now know the names of those Concordians who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Acton’s Monument Square has memorials to those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom in every major conflict but one, the American Revolution. How ironic, given the town’s seminal role. Thanks to the work of Beth van Duzer, we now know the names of those Concordians, most long lost and unrecognized, who made the ultimate sacrifice to bring a new democratic nation into being.
I strongly endorse the plan to make parcel 1693 a park. As mandated it should be one of quiet contemplation and the recognition of “unheard voices.” Those voices should be those of Concordians who fought and died for the birth of our nation, finally, in a fitting permanent memorial on Monument Square. There can be no better commemoration by our town for America’s 250th Birthday.
