More to School Committee meeting than discussion of public statements

I urge The Bridge to not only report accurately, but to cover our School Committee meetings with a more balanced lens.

The October 8 Acton-Carlisle Regional School Committee meeting featured a packed agenda: a vibrant update from the Black Student Union, a student rep report on the biggest Kicks for Cancer and Mighty Moose weekend yet, a budget workshop focused on fiscal responsibility, and the debut of our long-awaited “Story of the Schools.” These are real, positive moments in our district that deserve attention.

Instead, on October 10, The Acton Bridge chose to publish an online article suggesting the School Committee has adopted a “no-statements” policy, a claim that was inaccurate. Following my outreach, The Bridge updated its story to reflect the facts. I appreciate that correction, but I remain concerned about the tone and balance of the reporting.

To be clear: There is no blanket “no-statements” policy. The School Committee has issued statements in the past when circumstances called for it. We follow a thoughtful process to decide when and how to speak as a body. Factors include student privacy, jurisdiction, timing, leadership response, and the risk of politicizing sensitive issues. Silence does not mean inaction. Much of the real work happens in classrooms, in training sessions, and in committee meetings — not in headlines.

As a parent, I care deeply about combating hate in our schools and community. I support Dr. Hunter, our district leaders, and my colleagues in the work being done every day. That’s why I joined the committee and why I’m writing today.

I urge The Bridge to not only report accurately, but to cover our School Committee meetings with a more balanced lens. And I encourage residents to attend or watch our meetings to better understand the important work being done each week.
