Our Revolutionary War dead deserve a monument

Advocate for a memorial that honors these soldiers’ ultimate sacrifices as part of our anniversary commemoration.

I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding the decision made by the Concord250 Permanent Memorial Subcommittee to create a pocket park in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution while neglecting the opportunity to honor the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Revolutionary War with a monument in Monument Square.

It is disheartening that, despite notable research revealing the names and stories of 21 individuals who lost their lives in this war, these sacrifices are overshadowed by plans for a park devoid of a memorial component. Key figures such as Dr. Samuel Prescott, a midnight rider who became a prisoner of war, and John Corneall, who was killed in action in the second Battle of Saratoga, deserve to be remembered. Additionally, the contributions of patriots of color Titus Heywood and Sampson Yearney, who fought for freedoms denied to many, must not be overlooked.

Establishing a monument in the proposed pocket park would serve not only as a tribute to these heroes but also as a commitment to telling their stories and recognizing their sacrifices.

It is our responsibility to advocate for a memorial that honors these soldiers’ ultimate sacrifices as part of our anniversary commemoration. I urge the subcommittee to reconsider its decision and include a monument to pay tribute to the 21 soldiers who died during their service.

Your voice is crucial in this discussion. I encourage readers who share my sentiment to attend the next Permanent Memorial Subcommittee meeting and advocate for proper recognition of our soldiers. Together, we can ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
