Our schools are no ‘bastion of hate’
Seven antisemitic incidents over five years does not constitute systemic failure in a district of 4,000 students and staff.
I have been horrified reading about the recent hate incidents directed at our Jewish friends in this community. I stand with all of them. We can all agree that such acts are abhorrent and utterly unacceptable.
Unfortunately, I have been disappointed to hear that residents are using this painful experience to try to unseat the leadership we depend on to lead us through challenges like this.
I write this in support of the School Committee and Dr. Hunter’s work to address these travesties and foster the inclusive environment at the heart of this community.
Recent claims characterizing our schools as a “bastion of hate” misrepresent reality. Under Dr. Hunter’s guidance, our children have developed exceptional skills in acceptance and inclusion, creating a culture where diversity is celebrated.
While any show of hate is unacceptable, the data speaks clearly: seven antisemitic incidents over five years does not constitute systemic failure in a district of 4,000 students and staff. Dr. Hunter has demonstrated proactive leadership by establishing robust response protocols and strengthening these systems in collaboration with faith leaders, town officials, and affected community members.
Critics fault Superintendent Hunter for not publicly sharing disciplinary details, but Massachusetts General Law prohibits her from sharing information about students. She is protecting student privacy while ensuring swift, appropriate responses.
Personal attacks on Superintendent Hunter, particularly from individuals with limited current connection to our schools, undermine constructive dialogue about our educational goals.
Dr. Hunter’s collaborative approach, legal compliance, and unwavering commitment to creating safe, inclusive learning environments deserve continued support. Our schools reflect the values she champions: acceptance, growth, and respect for all.
Please join me in supporting Dr. Hunter and the School Committee in their critical collaborative work.
