Pair of aces: CCHS’ Sophie Redmond sinks 2 holes-in-one 2 weeks apart

Per PGA.com calculations, “a hole-in-one is scored once in every 3,500 rounds.”

Acton-Carlisle golfer Sophie Redmond recently achieved something many professional athletes never do.

Then she did it again.

On September 17, the senior co-captain hit a hole-in-one on the ninth hole at Acton Country Club in a match against Weston, which the Patriots won, 236-257.

On October 1, Redmond sank another ace, helping the Patriots win, 236-243.

Per PGA.com calculations, “a hole-in-one is scored once in every 3,500 rounds.”

“Obviously, I did get lucky,” said Redmond. “I know a lot of Division 1 college commits who have never done it. My sister, Erika, who plays for Merrimack College, has never done it.”

Redmond used a 9-iron on both shots.

“I know the course super-well. I’ve been playing it for four years,” she said.

“I switch between a pitching wedge and a 9-iron on that hole. The first time, I hit a good shot right next to the pin, and it rolled right in. The second time, it bounced off a hill and rolled in.”

‘It was surreal’

Coach Carl Sweeney called the shots “eerily identical. She had an identical swing on each. The ninth hole at Acton Country Club is not an easy hole.”

Said Redmond: “It was surreal. We were the last group, and the whole team was there for it.”

Prior to the pair of aces, Redmond had already accomplished plenty. As a sophomore, in the MIAA girls state championship, she finished second behind Erika. Last spring, she won the sectional championship.

Next year, she’ll continue her golf career at Loyola University in Chicago.

“The recruiting process can be tricky,” Redmond said.

“At the end of my junior year, I tried to see who was interested. I sent out 60 or 70 emails a week,” she said. “Loyola has a good, competitive team and brand-new facilities. I was in the middle of a three-day tournament this summer when the coach texted me an offer.”

Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, the Patriots are 9-3. On October 19, they’ll play in the MIAA Central Sectional tournament at Kettle Brook Golf Club in Paxton. If they qualify, the state tournament is October 26 at Wellesley Country Club.

“Sophie’s two hole-in-ones this season are remarkable, and her steady contributions to the team will be a big part of any success we have in the state tournament this season,” said CCHS Athletic Director Aaron Joncas. “In addition, Sophie is an outstanding school citizen and represents us with pride and integrity every time she steps on the course.”
