The Acton-Carlisle High School girls lacrosse team capped an epic 50th anniversary year with its first Division I state title, defeating Westford Academy in a tense 8-6 clash at Babson College.
The first quarter began with a Westford possession, and ninth grader Mamie Kosicki, in her first varsity start, turned away a free position. Scarlett Mirak and Karleigh Mutch added two quick goals before Westford answered. Lindsay Cain scored on a great feed from Mutch to make it 3-2, but Westford added two more to end the quarter with a 3-3 tie.
A tight second quarter saw Westford take the lead on a free position before Mirak fed Mutch for the 4-4 halftime deadlock.
The third quarter scoring started with a rocket from Cain, and Mutch continued her assist parade with a dish to Sarah Fortier, who netted a goal to make the score 6-4. Westford added one before Mirak drove through five players to end the third at 7-5.
The fourth brought Cain’s third goal on a slick move and pass from Mirak. Westford added another free position goal before a crucial sequence in the closing minutes. The Patriots had back-to-back yellow cards, leaving them down two players with the ball in the hands of Westford’s star at midfield. Aubrey Monaghan, Alissa Bono, and Cain surrounded her and pressured her to turn the ball over. After a quick time-out, the players kept the ball away from an aggressive Westford defense to secure the state title.
