Personal attacks on school leaders are unproductive — and harmful

Constructive criticism is necessary, but the ongoing negativity, mostly from those no longer connected to our schools, has crossed a line.

As a parent with children in this district for the past 18 years, I can no longer stay silent. I’ve grown frustrated watching a small but vocal group relentlessly attack School Committee Chair Tracey Marano and Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter. These dedicated leaders have poured their hearts, time, and energy into our schools, often at great personal cost, and they deserve far better.

They work tirelessly to provide our children with a high-quality education, making tough decisions that balance the needs of students, staff, and the community. These are not easy roles, and they deserve our support. Their commitment goes beyond the classroom; they strive to improve facilities, enhance programs, and foster a safe, inclusive environment where every child can thrive.

Constructive criticism is necessary, but the ongoing negativity, mostly from those no longer connected to our schools, has crossed a line. It’s not just unproductive; it’s harmful. Week after week, the same voices criticize without truly knowing our schools. I rarely see these individuals at games, performances, or events that showcase our community’s spirit. Instead, they focus on tearing down elected officials, most often with personal attacks, rather than supporting those working hard to uplift us all. Our schools and leaders deserve much better.

Issues such as the middle school naming have been discussed and decided. Rehashing them distracts us from what truly matters: supporting our students, teachers, and leaders. Now more than ever, our community must unite with respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to education.

Enough is enough. We should be grateful to those who serve despite pressure and personal attacks. Instead of tearing them down, let’s stand behind them.

Our students are watching, let’s show our leaders respect, gratitude, and unity. It’s time to move forward together.
