Post signage at White Pond to curtail damage by visitors
Visitors need to be educated about the damage they can cause through bank erosion and careless trash disposal.
White Pond’s water quality has benefited from the support of the town and the care and concern of the many residents who cherish it. It is the only pond in the area that has not been closed repeatedly in recent years due to toxic algae blooms. Higgins Environmental’s brilliant invention, the A-Pod, has been a success. The town’s support of that project is appreciated by all.
While I can understand the town’s elimination of the ranger position in these pressurized financial times, it does leave White Pond vulnerable to abuse by visitors who need to be educated about the damage they can cause through bank erosion and careless trash and waste disposal. The extension of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail has made access easy. The pond has a lot of visitors.
We should budget for the one-time expense to erect permanent signage in Sachem’s Cove informing people how to be responsible visitors — the do’s and don’ts a ranger would be telling them if we still had one.
