Road closures fostered closer connections
It’s time to take back our streets. (And keep the beer garden, too.)
Huge thanks to the Concord250 Committee, who put on a spectacular celebration on Patriots Day. It was amazing to see so many fellow Concordians on such a beautiful day celebrating the defense of freedom and liberty for all.
However, one aspect of the day that I did not anticipate bringing so much joy was the road closures in Acton Center, filling the streets with bikers and pedestrians. With cars being such a central part of daily life, it’s easy to forget how much space has been ceded to them. Last weekend’s celebration and the associated road closures highlighted the excitement and community that come from closing off Main Street to cars: more pedestrians, more connections, more shopping, and more fun.
The Town of Acton should harness the momentum from the 250th celebration and launch an open streets campaign in Acton Center for one day each month in summer 2025. It’s time to take back our streets. (And keep the beer garden, too.)
