School Committees’ votes marginalize Williams’ voice and the public’s will
The majority on the committee has reached a new low by failing to elect Dr. Williams to serve in any leadership capacity.
During Dr. Michael Williams’ first year as a School Committee member, the Acton School Committee blocked most of his requests to add items to its agenda. The majority on the committee has now reached a new low by failing to elect Dr. Williams to serve in any leadership capacity in the second year of his term.
This action not only marginalizes the only Black voice with a vote on the committee, but it also disrespects the will of the large majority of voters who put Dr. Williams into office with the expectation that he would serve as a fully functioning member.
It is not enough to elect town officials who have good intentions. We must elect candidates who are willing to undertake the difficult discussions needed to make lasting change and who have the skills to communicate respectfully in our increasingly multiracial community.
