Silence and a lack of accountability mean tacit tolerance of antisemitism

The fact that our school district has been named in a federal civil rights brief should spark outrage — and immediate change.

I am writing as a deeply concerned parent and community member in response to the recent filing by the Anti-Defamation League, Brandeis Center, and Mayer Brown LLP regarding antisemitism in the Acton-Carlisle school district. This amicus brief, submitted in federal court, should be a wake-up call to all of us. It confirms what many Jewish students and families have been saying for years: that antisemitism is not being adequately addressed in our schools.

It is heartbreaking — and infuriating — that it has taken national legal action for this issue to be acknowledged with the seriousness it deserves. Acton and Carlisle pride themselves on progressive values and excellent education. But how can we say we are truly educating our children if we are failing to provide a safe and inclusive environment for Jewish students?

Antisemitism is not just about swastikas on desks or hateful speech in hallways. It is also about silence from leadership, lack of consequences, and the absence of real education about Jewish identity and history. These failures send a clear message: that antisemitism is tolerated here.

It is time for accountability. Our school leaders must move beyond vague statements and take decisive action: training for staff, engagement with Jewish community organizations, meaningful curriculum changes, and transparency in how incidents are handled.

The fact that our school district has been named in a federal civil rights brief should spark outrage — and immediate change. We owe it to every student to ensure they feel seen, safe, and respected. That includes Jewish students.
