Sixth graders’ letters on water were illuminating
I had little idea as to the dimensions of the world water situation and that only 1% of Earth’s water is drinkable.
As usual, I received my weekly Acton Bridge on June 5. Like always, I scanned the various sections to see if anything is happening that would interest me. Then I turned to the Opinion page, and I was impressed when I read two letters that discussed the current world’s water shortage (“Don’t waste water when some are desperate for every gallon”; “Acton, don’t wait for drought; it’s time to turn off that water spout”).
I had little idea as to the dimensions of the world water situation and that only 1% of Earth’s water is drinkable. That got my attention and motivated me to be more careful as to my water usage. Both letters were informative.
But what impressed me the most was how well written and intellectually sound both opinions were. And they were written by sixth graders. Pretty impressive.
I think most agree that our world is in a confusing, dangerous state. It seems that current world leaders think that the solution to problems is to start a war. History tells us that wars are not a good idea. Judging by the previous opinions, it may be a good idea to listen to these sixth graders.
Also, it may be a good idea to ask a younger person’s perspective when you have a problem. I do, and their perspective is usually pretty good. We tend to overlook the old and the young when seeking diverse perspectives.
