Superintendent Hunter should scale back her list of objectives
The role of an effective leader is to create innovative futures aligned with the mission of his/her organization. The effective leader knows what few things that have to be accomplished to create this future. Additionally, they know what not to do as there are many conflicting efforts in any large organization. They can precisely identify the select few efforts that result in their future for the organization. These efforts are demonstrated by precise and measurable objectives.
The leader may only have four or five objectives as they do not want to have their efforts diluted by too many efforts. They target the important work and ignore other distracting efforts. Each objective is precisely written with firm measurements as to what accomplishment looks like. Once the objectives are written, they are followed by a precise five- or six-step plan to attain the objective. The role of a leader/manager is to help his/her people carry out the plans.
This brings me to Laurie Hunter’s list of objectives as outlined in the August 29 issue of The Acton Bridge. I would suggest that Ms. Hunter reduce her eight objectives to four of five of the most important efforts that will positively change the educational future of the school system.
