Support for Sam Hiersteiner’s ‘decency, patience,’ steadiness

Even — especially — if you didn’t vote for Select Board last time, getting out to vote for Sam (by March 31) is worthy of your time.

Not only do I endorse Sam Hiersteiner for Acton Select Board. For the 69% of Acton’s registered voters who did not vote the last time the Select Board was on the ballot, I would like to express why Sam is worth your turning out this time.

I first met Sam when the pre-K Acton-Carlisle Youth Soccer teams we were coaching scrimmaged against each other. I can’t recall which team scored more goals, but I do recall the distinct impression that his team had clearly won the coach lottery. The following year, we got to co-coach, and my impression was confirmed.

Who you are as a leader is who you are.

Three things stand out immediately about Sam:

  • He is engaging. He makes people feel seen, heard, relevant, and important — not because they can do something for him, but because he is other-centric to his core.
  • He thinks broadly and deeply. Writes cookbooks. Goes to the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Serves on the board at Gaining Ground. And cares enough about town governance to explain to the distracted amongst us how it works and encourage our participation.
  • He has high character. Sam exudes decency, patience, and a level head in all he does. He runs his coaching sessions how he runs his campaign — with the simple, profound phrase: “Be safe. Be kind. Have fun.”

Even — especially — if you didn’t vote for Select Board last time, getting out to vote for Sam (by March 31) is worthy of your time.
