Sustainability role would pay for itself

Sustainability seeks to provide more economic output with less resources — or doing more with less.

I would like to reinforce the message in the April 18 Bridge letter from Robert Andrews, “Reinstate town sustainability director position.” Sustainability seeks to provide more economic output with less resources — or doing more with less. The role should look across all town activities through an environmental lens, solving and uniting efforts with the goal of optimizing dollars spent with economic and environmental return.

Town resources should only be dedicated to environmental solutions that are commercially viable, providing an attractive return on investment, as well as environmental and social benefits. Social, environmental, and economic issues are inextricably linked. It is simple fiscal prudence to have this role, as without, efforts will be siloed and exacerbate fiscal risks.

A baseline of sustainability allows optimal economic and environmental efforts, most important in the throes of climate change, while the environmental solutions are flexible and can be scaled across many applications. A sustainability role should pay for itself many times over.
