Thanks for commitment to justice

The accounts we heard put human faces on the emerging data that reveal we have a lot of work to do, locally and beyond.

We want to thank the League of Women Voters of Acton-Carlisle, and the participating organizations, for organizing and hosting the April 8 Social Justice Roundtable. Thank you to COAR (Communities Organizing Against Racism) and Acton Carlisle Solidarity for their instrumental roles in the event, and all who offered their voices.

A capacity turnout at the Acton library heard troubling firsthand stories of how different non-majority members of our community have been mistreated. While many people in Acton and Carlisle may be immune to discrimination and harm and hate, others are not.

The accounts we heard put human faces on the emerging data that reveal we have a lot of work to do, locally and beyond, if we are to realize our aspiration to be a welcoming community for all. May each of us ask, how can we promote and protect the dignity of everyone in our community? What act of kindness, or bystander support, is available to me? Will I act on behalf of another?

We recognize that goals of equity and diversity are being maligned at the highest levels of our government. Nonetheless, the League’s commitment remains clear, “fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging for all people.” We are grateful for the many local organizations committed to social justice, and especially to those fellow citizens and neighbors who shared their voices with us at this necessary community event.

We hope to see you at our next active bystander training. Thank you.
