Trail marker concerns met with harassment
Simply suggesting there may be alternatives have seen marker proponents react with outrage.
Thanks to The Bridge for a fair article on the HDC’s recent review of an application for Black history markers. Unfortunately missing was the ugliness surrounding this review.
Supporters of having markers, who believed the design intrusive and inappropriate for an historic district, have been called racist or white supremacists. Simply suggesting there may be alternatives have seen marker proponents react with outrage and question the attitude toward people of color of those suggesting.
Members of the HDC have been so set upon that one recused himself from the last meeting because of the harassment his family felt. The HDC chair told me another member feared similar retribution if they did not vote in favor. Accusations of racism and white supremacy have been shouted at a town employee who was simply clarifying guidelines and offering advice.
Such behavior is despicable and needs to be exposed and rooted out. It has no place in our community. The Select Board and town manager have been made aware of this situation. I look forward to their response and solution.
