Voter packet’s ‘hostile’ wording on Question 2 reveals a deeper problem
Please support the needs of our community and vote “yes” on question 2 on August 19.
I was shocked to receive the voter information packet from the town regarding the upcoming ballot questions and to see it include an opinion so hostile to our school system that it describes appropriately funding the construction of an amenities building as “bullying” and the addition of ADA compliant restrooms as “self-serving.” I should not be surprised, though, since the argument against approving the debt exclusion exemplifies the problem we are facing as a community: any spending by the schools, whether for necessary infrastructure updates or even simple operating budgets, is seen by a loud and aggressive minority of townspeople as frivolous.
Children, their parents, and every other community-minded citizen knows the value and importance of funding our schools, as evidenced by the fact that Town Meeting already voted in favor of the project by over the two-thirds majority required. These facilities at Memorial Field are a decade overdue: the proposed building was carefully considered and planned and has the approval of our DEI Commission, Select Board, Finance Committee, and School Committee. Please support the needs of our community and vote “yes” on question 2 on August 19.
