Welcoming Acton’s newest scout troop with warm memories of adventures past

Through the scouting program, I grew as a leader and as a person, learning skills and other lessons that schools do not teach.

For generations, boys in Acton have had the opportunity to join Troop 132. Through the Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) program, they learn leadership and life skills while having fun in the outdoors.

As a younger sister whose brother was in scouting, I would always hear about the exciting adventures that he did with his troop, such as camping, mountain biking, skiing, and whitewater rafting, and I wished that I could participate.

Without a girls’ troop in Acton, I turned to Acton, where I joined Troop 12 and got to experience all of these activities I had previously watched my brother do. Through the scouting program, I grew as a leader and as a person, learning skills and other lessons that schools do not teach, including fire building, first aid, geocaching, and leadership.

Some highlights of my scouting journey include a weeklong canoeing trip in the Maine wilderness, hiking in the desert of Arizona, and staying up late around a campfire, making lasting memories with friends on camping trips closer to home. I have gained so much from scouting, including memories, friendships, and skills that will last a lifetime.

I am overjoyed that Acton has a new troop starting this fall for girls to participate in scouting, giving more girls access to this invaluable program that was previously only for boys.

Acton’s new Troop 147 will meet Tuesdays from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Acton Scout House and have monthly outings on weekends. They are actively looking for new members ages 11-17.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining, you can see more information on their website, troop147concord.org.
