What’s behind discontent with schools?

There are always conflicts and challenges to deal with. It’s part of community life. Why is this particular situation getting so out of hand?

Not having children in school, I was tempted to ignore the obvious reader upset about recent disturbing incidents towards school leadership, as I am ignorant of the substance of these hostilities. Yet, re-reading some of the recent letters published in The Bridge, I am left with the feeling that something is missing. People are reacting to negative behaviors, but not addressing their source. Why are some people so very angry at the school leadership? What is it that bothers them to such an extreme degree? What has been done to address those negative feelings?

Our society, in general, seems to be divided between a more verbally inclined and highly educated, liberalized elite versus others who tend to be more conservative in thinking and more “hands on” in their work and their responses. In children, acting out can suggest they don’t feel heard or their ideas/feelings considered important. Have schools reached out to the disenfranchised parents and responded to their concerns? If so, might the public be let in on what transpired?

Many of my family members have worked long years in schools as teachers, counselors, and/or administrators. There are always conflicts and challenges to deal with. It’s part of community life. So, my question for you is: Why is this particular situation getting so out of hand?
